Interested in “Photo Tourism” in Lisbon, Portugal?

Pitching an idea/thinking “out loud”….

Melissa and I have been kicking around a vacation idea for a few weeks now and are looking at making it come true – and we want YOU to join us! 🙂

Many of you know of my attempts over the years to pull together a workshop I call “Photo Tourism”. The idea is to go on the vacation you are already going on but go with a professional photographer (that would be me!) and learn how to take better photos as well.

We all carry a camera around with us – whether it’s on our phones or a dedicated device. But many people don’t know what makes for a good/great photo. They just click away and “hope it comes out”.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could go some place and have a professional instructor teach you how to take good pictures and be at your beck and call to help you capture the shots you see – no matter what kind of camera you have?

Wouldn’t it be great to come back from vacation and have people actually *want* to see your vacation photos? Or to have images you can proudly have printed out and displayed on your walls or to give as gifts to family and friends?

Wouldn’t it be great to go to a beautiful place and learn, not only how to take pictures of that place, but to gain knowledge that will help you with every photo you take afterwards?

That’s the basics of what I’m trying to do. Melissa and I are planning on being in Lisbon, Portugal during the school Spring Break here in BC. We’ll be there from March 23rd to the 30th (we’ll be honeymooning in Florence, Italy the week before!). Lisbon is an amazing and beautiful city – great scenery, food, history, tiles etc and, even better, really inexpensive! 🙂

The idea would be to meet on four of the mornings we are there to learn about specific aspects of photography – Composition, Landscape, Portraits, and Street/Black and White. We would spend an hour or so going over the concepts and then “hit the streets” as a group to practice the theory. After lunch, you’d be on your own to explore, shop, relax or continue to hang out with Melissa and I taking photographs.

On the last night of the trip, we’d have dinner and do a “photo critique” of our images and I’d give you additional tips and tricks on how to make them even better in editing.

I’ve been guesstimating costs and for someone flying out of Vancouver, the cost (including instruction, airfare and hotel) would be approximately $2000 CAN (so significantly cheaper for those of you in Toronto or the US/Europe). I’m trying to contact travel agents/tour operators to see if they can help with arrangements and to get costs even lower – if you know of any, please have them contact me!

So, Twitter friends – is this something that might be of interest to you? For those of you who know me and/or Melissa, you’ll know we’ll have a lot of fun learning about Lisbon and photography! Please let me know via email at and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
